Thomas Chalmers was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 23 January 1832. He was educated at the University of Glasgow and became an advocate for the abolition of slavery. After working as a lawyer, he moved to Melbourne, Australia, where he continued his involvement in the abolition movement. Chalmers also made considerable contributions to social reform. He was a co-founder of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), which now operates throughout the world. Chalmers served as President of the Victorian Women's Hospital, Vice-President of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Vice-President of the International Council for Animal Welfare. Thomas Chalmers died on 17 February 1929 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
